The Latest Mounts of Mayhem Update Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to the Game

The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament introduced into the game since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is now available and it might just revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.

An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides

The Mayhem Mounts drop also incorporates several new features and enhancements focused on riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the perfect fit for this update, as the development team had already known it was time for a new weapon.

"From the outset, we understood that we desired a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we envisioned it for fighting from atop a creature," explained a lead developer. "We prototyped a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also looked good for the use case."

If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can charge at your allies on horseback, the response is a resounding yes. In fact, there's even an offensive action excellently designed for it.

"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest functions for the spear, and it's a blast," the lead adds. "The spear has two attacks: You have the thrust, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you couch your lance and deal more damage [with] the more speed and velocity you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."

Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration

The wild enjoyment isn't limited to there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've visited The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] excellent for equipping the elytra and taking to the skies and creating genuine chaos," she hints.

In other words: Aerial lance combat is now real, and it should be made an Olympic sport without delay.

Another significant inclusion in this new update is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is inspired by the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it move you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also maintain your oxygen levels, so there's no necessity to surface for oxygen.

The rest of the additions are largely things that want to kill you, as is the way of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a zombie Nautilus appearing in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount — or the standard version, for that matter — with a puffer fish.

"We've been thinking about this challenge periodically, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a few different ideas for sea mounts that we wanted to experiment with, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."

She also notes that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you discover underwater."

Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements

Additional features include the Parched, biome-specific undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you venture in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on zombified camels, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an notable look that sees their skeletal frame exposed. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a similar exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.

The last two things on the drop's list are refinements, including some long-overdue tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can cross bodies of water while atop a horse. Additionally, high-tier barding is now craftable at the workbench, so you can give your horse the ultimate protection it deserves.

A Spicy Send-Off for the Year

In summary, the year-end release of the year is a pretty good one. The spear by itself — and the potential for chaos — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Add in the Nautilus, and new threats seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a little more dangerous.

The Mayhem Mounts update is available for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
