Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
